Your brain is always listening—even over a summer drink.

This photo is of our “Let’s be intentional” group enjoying a summer evening together. It is easy to think of intention-setting or self-talk as private, internal work—but the reality is our brains are always listening to the conversations we have with others, too.

Every word shared—kindness, encouragement, doubt, excitement—leaves its mark. Neuroscience tells us our Reticular Activating System (RAS) acts like a filter, helping us notice and prioritise what aligns with what we repeatedly hear and think.

That is why these kinds of intentional conversations matter.

When we sit together, share hopes, listen without judgment, and reflect on change—even over a glass of bubbles—it is not just socialising. It is shaping the stories we tell ourselves, the goals we see as possible, and the pathways our brains will start to seek out.

It reminds me of the phrase:

“Hear me now, understand me later.” – Dr. Martha Beck

We do not always grasp the full power of these exchanges in the moment. But our brains store them, work on them, and return them to us when we are ready to act.

💬 Have you ever had a conversation that seemed small at the time, but changed something big later on? I would love to hear your reflections.

Because our brains are always listening. Let’s choose what we feed them—and each other—with intention.
